Every Saturday morning from 10am – 1pm, there is a farmers’ and artisan food producers’ market in Eveleigh right outside Carriageworks. We were there to see the 19th Biennale of Sydney exhibition inside Carriageworks, but right outside was this bustling market! Already lots of people were heading off for the rest of their weekend with their fruits and vegies and other random goods.
To get here, there is some free parking (a 5 minute walk away in the residential areas), but they also run a FREE shuttle bus between the markets, Redfern train station and Eskineville . See their website for details.

Many people just walk here. Like this dog.
We took some snaps of this cute little chap, before his owner came over and we ran away.
Eveleigh Farmers’ Market is a very dog friendly market – tons of people were towing their dogs along (and children). The website even has a K9 code for bringing your four-legged friend to the markets.

This market features 70+ stalls operated by local and regional NSW and ACT farmers and artisan food producers. What are artisan food producers? I guess it’s like the people who hand-make food – like jams (see this guy in the bottom left of the photo), bread (Sonoma had a stall but were packed up already), milk, cookies and…even dog biscuits.

Check out these super round carrots! They almost look like potatoes.
The focus of the Eveleigh Markets is on buying fresh, seasonal, local produce. This is not only for people shopping for their groceries, but restaurants as well. There’s many benefits not only in terms of quality (fresh), quality (seasonal, organic, biodynamic – I’m not sure what that means…), but also the good karma that comes from supporting the local Aussie farmers and reducing one’s “food miles”.

While you’re here, sample a drink or buy a bottle!

There’s a number of venues serving lunch foods too. Unfortunately we’d already eaten brunch at St Jude, so we could only eat with our eyes.

But we fit in a free sample of these “flats”. It makes me think of ballet flats (shoes), but this is basically flattened fruits/vegetable mixes – kind of like a chip.

You can also get Asian foods. Check out this stacked steamer.

It’s too bad the Sonoma stall is already closed for the day, but there’s plenty of other bakeries set up in the hall.
What I like about the Eveleigh market is how open it is. The place is undercover, but essentially open on three of the four possible walls. It’s a lot less dank that the wet markets in Flemington and Market City.

Here’s one final photo of a beagle, taking a rest while the family eats their lunch.
